Psychological profiling is not a new concept but it is one the public has become more familiar with due to popular television shows like Criminal Minds. The basic principles involved in profiling are presented along with a variety of situations in which profiling can be useful. Examples of profiling are drawn from World War II, the Cold War, current terrorist activity, criminal behaviours, and “speed dating.”
Profiling makes predictions of probable behaviours possible and increases one’s ability to prepare a diversity of options for potential situations. How is it done? Are there ethical issues? Famous profiling mistakes are discussed.
